Genesis 40

1 And it came to pass, after these things—the butler of the king of Egypt and the baker had sinned against their lord, against the king of Egypt. 2 And Pharaoh was angry against his two eunuchs, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers, 3 and put them in confinement in the house of the chief of the executioners, into the round-house, the place where Joseph was a prisoner, 4 and the chief of the executioners charged Joseph with them, and he served them. And they were in confinement for some days. 5 And they dreamed a dream both of them, each his dream in one night, each according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker whom the king of Egypt had, who were prisoners in the round-house. 6 And Joseph came to them in the morning, and saw them, and look, they were morose. 7 And he asked Pharaoh’s eunuchs who were with him in confinement in the house of his lord, saying, “Why are your faces sad today?” 8 And they said to him, “We have dreamed a dream, and there is no interpreter of it.” And Joseph said to them, “Are interpretations not with God? Please recount to me.” 9 And the chief of the butlers recounted his dream to Joseph and said to him, “In my dream, then look, a vine was before me! 10 And in the vine were three branches, and it was as it were flourishing. Gone up had its blossom, its clusters had ripened grapes. 11 And Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and pressed them into the cup of Pharaoh, and I gave the cup into the hand of Pharaoh.” 12 And Joseph said to him, “This is its interpretation: the three branches are three days. 13 Yet, within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head, and has put you back on your station, and you +will have given the cup of Pharaoh into his hand, according to the former custom when you were his butler. 14 Surely if you have remembered me with you, when it is well with you, and have please done kindness with me, and have made mention of me to Pharaoh, then you have brought me out from this house, 15 for I was really stolen from the land of the Hebrews. And here also I have done nothing that they have put me in the pit for.” 16 And the chief of the bakers saw that he had interpreted good, and he said to Joseph, “I also was in a dream, and look, three baskets of white bread were on my head, 17 and in the highest basket were of all kinds of Pharaoh’s food, work of a baker. And the birds were eating them out of the basket, from off my head.” 18 And Joseph answered and said, “This is its interpretation: the three baskets are three days. 19 Yet, within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head from off you, and has hanged you on a tree, and the birds have eaten your flesh from off you.” 20 And it came to pass, on the third day, Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a banquet to all his servants, and lifted up the head of the chief of the butlers, and the head of the chief of the bakers among his servants, 21 and he put back the chief of the butlers to his butlership, and he gave the cup into the hand of Pharaoh. 22 And the chief of the bakers he had hanged, as Joseph had interpreted to them. 23 And the chief of the butlers had not remembered Joseph, but forgot him.
