Genesis 13

1 And Abram went up from Egypt (he and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him) toward the Negev. 2 And Abram was exceedingly wealthy in livestock, in silver, and in gold. 3 And he went on his journeys from the Negev, even to Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai— 4 to the place of the altar which he made there at the first, and there Abram called on the name of YHWH.

5 And also to Lot, who was going with Abram, there were sheep and oxen and tents. 6 And the land did not permit them to stay together, for their substance was much, and they were not able to stay together. 7 And there was a strife between those feeding Abram’s livestock and those feeding Lot’s livestock. And the Canaanite and the Perizzite were then staying in the land.

8 And Abram said to Lot, “Please let there not be strife between me and you, and between my shepherds and your shepherds, for we are men—brothers. 9 Is not all the land in front of you? Please be parted from me. If you go to the left, then I will go to the right. And if to the right, then I to the left.”

10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and saw the whole circuit of the Jordan that it was all a watered country, (before YHWH’s destroying Sodom and Gomorrah). It was as YHWH’s garden, as the land of Egypt in your coming toward Zoar. 11 And Lot chose for himself the whole circuit of the Jordan. And Lot journeyed from the east, and they were parted—a man from his companion. 12 Abram stayed in the land of Canaan, and Lot stayed in the cities of the circuit, and moved his tent to Sodom. 13 And the men of Sodom were evil, and sinners before YHWH exceedingly.

14 And YHWH said to Abram, after Lot’s being parted from him, “Now lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward; 15 for the whole of the land which you see, I will give it to you and to your seed to a distant age. 16 And I will make your seed as the dust of the earth, so that, if one was able to number the dust of the earth, even your seed could be numbered. 17 Rise, go up and down through the land, to its length, and to its breadth, for I will give it to you.” 18 And Abram moved his tent, and came, and stayed among the oaks of Mamre, which were in Hebron, and he built an altar to YHWH there.
