1 And YHWH said to Abram, “Go for yourself, from your land, and from your family, and from the house of your father, to the land which I will show you. 2 And I will make you become a great nation, and bless you, and make your name great; and you will be a blessing. 3 And I will bless those blessing you and I will curse him who curses you. And all families of the ground will be blessed in you.”
4 And Abram went on, as YHWH had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was 75 years old in his going out from Haran. 5 And Abram took his wife Sarai, and his brother’s son Lot, and all their substance that they had gained, and the persons that they had obtained in Haran. And they went out to go toward the land of Canaan, and they came to the land of Canaan. 6 And Abram passed over into the land, to the place of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land. 7 And YHWH appeared to Abram and said, “To your seed I gave this land.” And there he built an altar to YHWH, who had appeared to him. 8 And he moved on from there toward a mountain at the east of Beth-El, and stretched out the tent (Beth-El at the west, and Ai at the east), and he built an altar to YHWH there, and called out in the name of YHWH. 9 And Abram journeyed, going on and journeying toward the Negev. 10 And there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down toward Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land. 11 And it came to pass as he drew near to enter Egypt, that he said to his wife Sarai, “Now look, I know that you are a woman of beautiful appearance; 12 and it will come to pass that the Egyptians will see you, and they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ And they will kill me, and you they will keep alive. 13 Please say you are my sister, so that it will be well with me because of you, and I myself will live for your sake.”
14 And it came to pass, at the entering of Abram into Egypt, that the Egyptians saw the woman that she was exceedingly beautiful. 15 And princes of Pharaoh saw her and praised her to Pharaoh, and the woman was taken to Pharaoh’s house. 16 And he did good to Abram because of her. And he had sheep and oxen, and male donkeys, and menservants, and handmaids, and female donkeys, and camels. 17 And YHWH plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues for the matter of Sarai, Abram’s wife. 18 And Pharaoh called for Abram and said, “What is this you have done to me? Why did you not declare to me that she is your wife? 19 Why did you said, ‘She is my sister,’ and I took her for myself for a wife? And now, look, your wife. Take her and go.” 20 And Pharaoh charged men concerning him, and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.
