Genesis 37

1 And Jacob stayed in the land of his father’s sojournings—in the land of Canaan. 2 This is the family history of Jacob: Joseph, was seventeen years old, and had been enjoying himself with his brothers among the flock (and he was a youth), with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives, and Joseph brought in an account of their evil to their father. 3 And Israel loved Joseph more than any of his sons, for he was a son of his old age, and had made for him a long coat. 4 And his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of his brothers, and they hated him, and were not able to speak to him peaceably. 5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and declared it to his brothers, and they continued still more to hate him. 6 And he said to them, “Please hear this dream which I have dreamed: 7 that, look, we were binding bundles in the middle of the field, and look, my bundle arose, and also stood up, and look, your bundles were all around, and they bowed themselves to my bundle.” 8 And his brothers said to him, “Will you certainly reign over us? Will you certainly rule over us?” And they continued still more to hate him, for his dreams, and for his words. 9 And he dreamed yet another dream, and recounted it to his brothers, and said, “Look, I have dreamed a dream again, and look, the sun and the moon, and eleven stars, were bowing themselves to me.” 10 And he recounted it to his father, and to his brothers. And his father pushed against him, and said to him, “What is this dream which you have dreamed? Will we certainly come, I, and your mother, and your brothers—to bow ourselves to you, to the earth?” 11 And his brothers were zealous against him, and his father kept the word. 12 And his brothers went to feed the flock of their father in Shechem, 13 and Israel said to Joseph, “Are your brothers not feeding in Shechem? Come, and I will send you to them.” And he said to him, “Here I am.” 14 And he said to him, “Now go see the peace of your brothers, and the peace of the flock, and bring me back word.” And he sent him from the Valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem. 15 And a man found him, and look, he was wandering in the field, and the man asked him, saying, “What do you seek?” 16 And he said, “I am seeking my brothers, please declare to me where they are feeding.” 17 And the man said, “They have journeyed from this place, for I have heard some saying, ‘Let us go to Dothan,’” and Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan. 18 And they saw him from afar, even before he drew near to them, and they conspired against him to put him to death. 19 And they said to one another, “Look, this man of the dreams comes. 20 And now, come, and we kill him, and throw him into one of the pits, and will say, ‘An evil beast has devoured him.’ And we see what his dreams become.” 21 And Reuben heard, and delivered him out of their hand, and said, “Let us not strike the life.” 22 And Reuben said to them, “Shed no blood. Throw him into this pit which is in the wilderness, and do not put out a hand on him,” in order to deliver him out of their hand, to bring him back to his father. 23 And it came to pass, when Joseph had come to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his coat, the long coat which was on him, 24 and took him and threw him into the pit. And the pit was empty, there was no water in it. 25 And they sat down to eat bread, and they lifted up their eyes, and looked, and look, a caravan of Ishmaelites were coming from Gilead, and their camels were carrying spices, and balm, and myrrh, going to take them down to Egypt. 26 And Judah said to his brothers, “What gain is there if we kill our brother, and conceal his blood? 27 Come, and we will sell him to the Ishmaelites, and our hands will not be on him, for he is our brother—our flesh.” And his brothers listened. 28 And Midianite merchantmen passed by and they drew out and brought up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmaelites for twenty pieces of silver, and they brought Joseph into Egypt. 29 And Reuben returned to the pit, and look, Joseph was not in the pit, and he tore his garments, 30 and he returned to his brothers and said, “The boy is not, and I—to where will I go?” 31 And they took the coat of Joseph, and slaughtered a kid of the goats, and dipped the coat in the blood, 32 and sent the long coat, and they brought it to their father, and said, “We have found this. Please discern whether it is your son’s coat or not.” 33 And he discerned it and said, “My son’s coat! An evil beast has devoured him. Torn—Joseph is torn!” 34 And Jacob tore his raiment, and put sackcloth on his loins, and became a mourner for his son many days. 35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose to comfort him, and he refused to comfort himself, and said, “For I go down to my son mourning, to Sheol,” and his father wept for him. 36 And the Midianites sold him to Egypt, to Potiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, head of the executioners.
