1 And the snake was more cunning than every beast of the field which YHWH God had made. And he said to the woman, “Is it true that God has said, ‘Do not eat from every tree of the garden?’” 2 And the woman said to the snake, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat, 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘Do not eat of it, nor touch it, so you will not die.’” 4 And the snake said to the woman, “You will not certainly die! 5 For God knows that in the day of your eating of it, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” 6 And the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and the tree was desirable to make one wise. And she took from its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig-leaves and made loincloths for themselves. 8 And they heard the sound of YHWH God walking up and down in the garden at the breeze of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the face of YHWH God in the middle of the trees of the garden. 9 And YHWH God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard Your sound in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” 11 And He said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I have commanded you not to eat?” 12 And the man said, “The woman whom You placed with me—she gave to me from the tree, and I ate.” 13 And YHWH God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The snake tricked me, and I ate.” 14 And YHWH God said to the snake, “Because you have done this, you are cursed above all the livestock, and above every beast of the field. On your belly you will go and dust you will eat all days of your life. 15 And I put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise His heel.” 16 To the woman He said, “Multiplying I multiply your sorrow and your conception. You will give birth to children in sorrow, and your desire will be toward your husband, and he will rule over you.” 17 And to the man He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and ate from the tree concerning which I ordered you, saying, ‘Do not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground on your account. In sorrow you will eat from it all days of your life, 18 and it will bring out thorns and brambles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. 19 By the sweat of your face you will eat bread until your return to the ground—because you have been taken out of it. For dust you are, and to dust you will return.” 20 And the man called his wife’s name Eve (which means Life), because she was the mother of all living.
21 And YHWH God made coats of skin for the man and his wife, and clothed them. 22 And YHWH God said, “Look, the man has become like one of Us, concerning knowing good and evil. And now, so he won’t reach out his hand and take also from the Tree of Life, and eat, and live to a distant age...!” 23 And YHWH God sent him out from the Garden of Eden to serve the ground from which he had been taken. 24 And He drove out the man, and caused the cherubs to stay at the east of the Garden of Eden with the sword of flame whirling around to guard the way to the Tree of Life.
