Genesis 2

1 And the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their many parts. 2 And the seventh day God completed His work which He had made, and He rested the seventh day from all His work which He had made. 3 And God blessed the seventh day, and made it holy, because in it He had rested from all His work which God had created for making.

4 This is the history of the heavens and of the earth in their being created, in the day of YHWH God’s making the earth and the heavens. 5 And no shrub of the field was yet on the earth, and no plant of the field had yet sprouted, because YHWH God had not made it rain on the earth, and there was no man to serve the ground. 6 And a mist went up from the earth, and watered the whole surface of the ground. 7 And YHWH God formed the man from dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils living breath, and the man became a living creature.

8 And YHWH God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and He set there the man whom He had formed. 9 And YHWH God caused to sprout from the ground every tree desirable for looking at and good for food—and the Tree of Life in the middle of the garden, and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. 10 And a river was going out from Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided and became four riverheads. 11 The name of the first is Pison (which means Spreader). It is that which is surrounding the whole land of Havilah where the gold is, 12 and the gold of that land is good. The bdellium and the shoham stone are there. 13 And the name of the second river is Gihon (which means Gusher). It is that which is surrounding the whole land of Cush. 14 And the name of the third river is the Tigris. It is that which goes east of Assyria. And the fourth river, it is the Euphrates. 15 And YHWH God took the man, and placed him in the Garden of Eden, to serve it and to keep it. 16 And YHWH God ordered the man, saying, “From every tree of the garden, eating you may eat. 17 But from the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, do not eat from it, because in the day of your eating from it—you will certainly die.”

18 And YHWH God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make him a helper as his counterpart.” 19 And YHWH God formed from the ground every beast of the field, and every bird of the heavens, and brought them to the man, to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called a living creature, that became its name. 20 And the man called out names for all the livestock, and to birds of the heavens, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam a helper was not found as his counterpart. 21 And YHWH God caused a deep sleep to fall on the man, and he slept, and He took one of his ribs, and closed up flesh in its place. 22 And YHWH God built up the rib which He had taken out of the man into a woman, and brought her to the man. 23 And the man said, “This one at last! Bone of my bone, and flesh of my flesh!” For this one will be called Woman, because this one has been taken from Man. 24 Therefore a man leaves his father and his mother, and clings to his wife, and they become one flesh. 25 And both of them were naked, the man and his wife, and they were not ashamed.
