Genesis 39

1 And Joseph had been brought down to Egypt, and Potiphar, a eunuch of Pharaoh, head of the executioners, an Egyptian man, bought him out of the hands of the Ishmaelites who had brought him there. 2 And YHWH was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man, and he was in the house of his lord the Egyptian, 3 and his lord saw that YHWH was with him, and all that he was doing YHWH was causing to prosper in his hand, 4 and Joseph found grace in his eyes and served him, and he appointed him over his house, and all that he had he had given into his hand. 5 And it came to pass from the time that he had appointed him over his house, and over all that he had, that YHWH blessed the house of the Egyptian for Joseph’s sake, and the blessing of YHWH was on all that he had, in the house, and in the field. 6 And he left all that he had in the hand of Joseph, and he had not known anything that he had, except the bread which he was eating. And Joseph was of a handsome form, and of a handsome appearance. 7 And it came to pass after these things, that his lord’s wife lifted up her eyes to Joseph and said, “Lie with me.” 8 and he refused and said to his lord’s wife, “Look, my lord has not known what is with me in the house, and all that he has he has given into my hand. 9 None is greater in this house than I, and he has not withheld from me anything, except you, because you are his wife. And how will I do this great evil? Then I have sinned against God.” 10 And it came to pass at her speaking to Joseph day by day, that he had not listened to her, to lay near her, to be with her. 11 And it came to pass about this day, that he goes into the house to do his work, and there was none of the men of the house there in the house, 12 and she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” and he left his garment in her hand, and fled, and goes outside. 13 And it came to pass, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand, and fled outside, 14 that she called for the men of her house, and spoke to them, saying, “See, he has brought a man to us, a Hebrew, to play with us. He has come in to me, to lay with me, and I called with a loud voice, 15 and it came to pass, when he heard that I have lifted up my voice and called, that he leaves his garment near me, and fled, and goes outside.” 16 And she placed his garment near her, until the coming in of his lord to his house. 17 And she spoke to him according to these words, saying, “The Hebrew servant whom you have brought to us, has come in to me to play with me. 18 And it came to pass, when I lifted my voice and called, that he left his garment near me, and fled outside.” 19 And it came to pass, when his lord heard the words of his wife, which she had spoken to him, saying, “According to these things has your servant done to me,” that his anger burned. 20 And Joseph’s lord took him, and put him to the round-house, a place where the king’s prisoners were bound. And he was there in the round-house. 21 And YHWH was with Joseph, and stretched out kindness to him, and put his grace in the eyes of the chief of the round-house. 22 And the chief of the round-house gave into the hand of Joseph all the prisoners who were in the round-house, and of all that they were doing there, he had been doer. 23 The chief of the round-house did not see anything under his hand, because YHWH was with him, and that which he was doing YHWH was causing to prosper.
