1 And all the congregation of the sons of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, on their journeys, by the command of YHWH, and encamped in Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink. 2 And the people strove with Moses, and said, “Give us water, and we drink.” And Moses said to them, “Why do you strive with me? Why do you try YHWH?” 3 And the people thirsted for water there, and the people murmured against Moses, and said, “Why is this that you have brought us up out of Egypt to put us to death, also our sons and our livestock, with thirst?” 4 And Moses cried to YHWH, saying, “What do I do to this people? Yet a little. And they have stoned me.” 5 And YHWH said to Moses, “Pass over before the people, and take with you from the elderly of Israel, and take your rod in your hand, with which you have struck the River, and you will go. 6 Look, I will be standing before you there on the rock in Horeb, and you will strike on the rock, and waters will come out from it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so before the eyes of the elderly of Israel, 7 and he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the strife of the sons of Israel, and because of their trying YHWH, saying, “Is YHWH in our middle or not?” 8 And Amalek came, and fought with Israel in Rephidim, 9 and Moses said to Joshua, “Choose men for us, and go out, fight with Amalek: tomorrow I will be standing on the top of the hill, and the rod of God in my hand.” 10 And Joshua did as Moses had said to him, to fight with Amalek, and Moses, Aaron, and Hur had gone up to the top of the height. 11 And it had come to pass, when Moses lifted up his hand, that Israel was mighty, and when he let his hands rest, that Amalek was mighty. 12 And the hands of Moses were heavy, and they took a stone and set it under him, and he sat on it, and Aaron and Hur took hold on his hands, one on this side and one on that side. And his hands were steadfast until the going in of the sun. 13 and Joshua weakened Amalek and his people by the mouth of the sword. 14 And YHWH said to Moses, “Write this, a memorial in a Scroll, and set it in the ears of Joshua, that I utterly wipe away the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens.” 15 and Moses built an altar, and called its name YHWH-Nissi, 16 and said, “Because a hand is on the throne of YAH, war is to YHWH with Amalek from generation to generation.”
