Exodus 16

1 And they journeyed from Elim, and all the congregation of the sons of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which was between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month of their going out from the land of Egypt. 2 And all the congregation of the sons of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron in the wilderness. 3 And the sons of Israel said to them, “Oh that we had died by the hand of YHWH in the land of Egypt, in our sitting by the flesh-pot, in our eating bread to satiety—for you have brought us out to this wilderness to put all this assembly to death with hunger.” 4 And YHWH said to Moses, “Look, I will rain bread from the heavens for you—and the people will gone out and gather the matter of a day in its day—so that I try them whether they walk in My law or not. 5 And it will be on the sixth day, that they prepare that which they bring in, and it will not be double above that which they gather day by day.” 6 And Moses said—Aaron also—to all the sons of Israel, “Evening—and you will know that YHWH has brought you out from the land of Egypt. 7 And morning—and you will see the glory of YHWH, in His hearing your murmurings against YHWH, and what are we, that you murmur against us?” 8 And Moses said, “In YHWH’s giving to you flesh to eat in the evening, and bread in the morning to satiety—in YHWH’s hearing your murmurings, which you are murmuring against Him, and what are we? Your murmurings are not against us, but against YHWH.” 9 And Moses said to Aaron, “Say to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, Come near before YHWH, for He has heard your murmurings.” 10 And it came to pass, when Aaron was speaking to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, that they turned toward the wilderness, and look, the glory of YHWH was seen in the cloud. 11 And YHWH spoke to Moses, saying, 12 “I have heard the murmurings of the sons of Israel. Speak to them, saying, Between the evenings you will eat flesh, and in the morning you will be satisfied with bread, and you will know that I am your God YHWH.” 13 And it came to pass in the evening, that the quail came up, and covered the camp, and in the morning there had been the laying of dew around the camp, 14 and the laying of the dew goes up, and look, on the face of the wilderness was a thin, bare thing, thin as hoarfrost on the earth. 15 And the sons of Israel saw, and said to one another, “What is it?” For they had not known what it was. And Moses said to them, “It is the bread which YHWH has given to you for food. 16 This is the thing which YHWH has commanded: Gather of it, each according to his eating, an omer for the counted head. And the number of your persons, take, each, for those in his tent.” 17 And the sons of Israel did so, and they gathered, he who was gathering much, and he who was gathering little. 18 And they measured with an omer, and he who was gathering much had nothing over, and he who was gathering little had no lack, each according to his eating they had gathered. 19 And Moses said to them, “Let no man leave of it until morning.” 20 And they did not listen to Moses, and some of them left of it until morning, and it brought up worms and stank. And Moses was angry with them. 21 And they gathered it morning by morning, each according to his eating. When the sun had been warm, then it had melted. 22 And it came to pass on the sixth day, they had gathered a second bread, two omers for one, and all the princes of the congregation came in, and declared it to Moses. 23 And he said to them, “It is that which YHWH has spoken: A rest—a holy Sabbath to YHWH—is tomorrow. That which you bake, bake. And that which you boil, boil. And all that is remaining, let it rest for yourselves for preservation until the morning.” 24 And they let it rest until the morning, as Moses had commanded, and it had not stunk, and a worm had not been in it. 25 And Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to YHWH. Today you will not find it in the field: 26 six days you gather it, and in the seventh day—the Sabbath—there is none in it.” 27 And it came to pass on the seventh day, some of the people had gone out to gather, and had not found. 28 And YHWH said to Moses, “How long have you refused to keep My commands and My laws? 29 See, because YHWH has given the Sabbath to you, therefore He is giving to you on the sixth day bread of two days. Each abide in his place, no one goes out from his place on the seventh day.” 30 And the people rested on the seventh day, 31 and the house of Israel called its name Manna, and it was as white coriander seed. And its taste was as a cake with honey. 32 And Moses said, “This is the thing which YHWH has commanded: Fill the omer with it, for a charge for your generations, so that they see the bread which I have caused you to eat in the wilderness, in My bringing you out from the land of Egypt.” 33 And Moses said to Aaron, “Take one pot, and put the fullness of the omer of manna in there, and let it rest before YHWH, for a charge for your generations.” 34 As YHWH had given command to Moses, so Aaron let it rest before the Testimony, for a charge. 35 And the sons of Israel had eaten the manna for 40 years, until their coming to the land to be inhabited. They had eaten the manna until their coming to the extremity of the land of Canaan. 36 And the omer was a tenth of the ephah.
